| Cristo Barrios releases his fourth CD |
|
In June 2009 Cristo Barrios released his fourth CD (RALS), 'New pieces for clarinet and piano'. This time he recorded a set of six pieces for clarinet and piano by composers from the Canary Islands. Last July 2008 Barrios recorded his fourth CD (RALS), accompanied by Evelyn Chang, with whom he has been working for the last two years in this project. Thus, in 2006 Cristo comissioned six pieces for clarinet and piano to some of the most important composers of his generation in the Canary Islands. These composers are: Juan Manuel Marrero, who works at IRCAM (Paris); Gustavo Trujillo, professor at the Rotterdam Conservatory; Juan Manuel Ruiz, composer of great success who is premièring all over Europe; Raquel Cristobal, professor at the Conservatorio Superior de Canarias; Gustavo Díaz Jerez, professor at Musikene (San Sebastián); Manuel Bonino, professor at the Conservatorio Superior de Canarias. Critics of some of the premières were extremelly positive: "A luxury clarinettist, fully commited to explore with his instrument all the expresive force in the music he plays, which he controls extremely well in all its aspects. Intelligent Cristo Barrios, who played the lead in this historic event. An exemple of performer to be followed today, with that curiosity about new repertoires, taking them very seriously and offering very solid versions. Excepcionally responsible this Cristo Barrios towards the music he interprets, and absolutely respectful." (La Provincia - July 2007). This recording has not only an artistic value but it is also a testimony to the musical creation process of these islands. |

| Cristo Barrios performes in a petrol tank |
Cristo Barrios will participate next July 4th at the Festival Keroxen09, a very special series of concerts dedicated to contemporary music and contemporary art. The Festival will take place at a very curious location, a petrol tank. Called 'Sólo clarinete solo', this recital will show pieces for clarinet alone by Bruno Bettinelli, Tom Johnson, Valentino Bucchi and Steve Reich. The concert will start at 10:00 pm. Surrounded by an explendid exhibition created by the Canarian artist Néstor Torrens who, among other materials, presents a piece of art made of 4 kms. of carpet, Cristo Barrios will perform a programme which explores the multiple effects and techniques of the clarinet, thanks to the music of the 20th Century, which makes a radical use of this instrument, ignoring its traditional sweet sound. Extreme sounds at this unique place: El Tanque. This unusual venue -with its kerosene smell, its industrial look, its peculiar acustics and its big size- contributes to a very intense experience to our senses and to make the audience concentrate on the music: extraordinary sounds at a surprising building. Meanwhile, this event will be used as the presentation of Barrios' last CD, 'New pieces for clarinet and piano' (RALS), a selection of music for clarinet and piano by composers of the Canary Islands.
